Woodland path through tall trees, Petersburg, WV, 1916

About this postcard

A narrow dirt path climbs through a stand of tall, slender trees, with sunlight breaking through the canopy and thick green undergrowth crowding the trail's edges. No caption or landmark identifies the spot, so the view reads as generic Appalachian woodland. The card was mailed from Petersburg, in West Virginia's Potomac Highlands, to Berkeley Springs, a mineral springs resort town in the eastern panhandle that had drawn visitors for their health since the colonial era. Mixed hardwood forest of the kind shown covers much of that folded mountain country. The address reads Grant Yohn, though the place index renders the surname as Yoker.
