About this postcard

A corner view of the new F. W. Woolworth Co. five-and-dime at 39th Street and Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. The store's red-and-gold ground-floor fascia is lettered 'F. W. WOOLWORTH CO.' below a tall, vertically ribbed cream facade. Pedestrians crowd the sidewalk while a yellow bus and period automobiles fill the street. Woolworth's was the leading American five-and-dime chain, and this branch stood in Midtown's busy commercial district, a few blocks south of the New York Public Library and near the Fifth Avenue department stores. By the 1940s the chain's signs were familiar in downtowns across the country.
