About this postcard

A woman sits beside a young child at a round table, guiding the child's hand as they write a letter. Above them a pale inset shows soldiers in a trench, tying the domestic scene to the front. The printed caption reads "WRITING A LETTER TO DADDY." The card was mailed from Wilmington, Delaware, in early December 1918, weeks after the armistice, and the penciled note inside is a child's plea to "hurry up and come home for good." It is addressed to Corp. John R. Brown, 2nd Co., 1st Tr. Bn., 154th Depot Brigade, Camp Meade, Maryland. Camp Meade was a wartime cantonment between Baltimore and Washington where soldiers trained before shipping to France; the post later became Fort George G. Meade, named for the Union general who commanded the Army of the Potomac.
