About this postcard

The left-hand group of a bronze memorial in Verviers, Belgium, commemorating the 1914-1918 campaign. A woman at the front points ahead, leading a cluster of men in varied poses; the figures stand on a stone base inscribed "INDEPENDANCE". Verviers was an industrial wool town in eastern Belgium, near the German border, and it was occupied during the war. After 1918, towns across Belgium raised civic monuments to the campaign and its dead, often combining allegorical figures with soldiers or citizens.
