About this postcard

A tall stone obelisk stands on a grassy rise, with a cannon and a pile of cannonballs in the foreground and trees framing the scene. The Wyoming Monument was erected in 1841 to honor the victims of the Wyoming Massacre of July 3, 1778, a Revolutionary War battle in the Wyoming Valley. The Patriot force is described as "a handful of patriotic Americans, composed chiefly of the undisciplined, youthful and aged," overwhelmed by British, Tory, and Indian forces. The monument stands in Wyoming, Pennsylvania, near Wilkes-Barre.
