A seated Yakushi Nyorai, the Buddha of healing, raises his right hand in the abhaya gesture and rests on a carved lotus throne above an ornate pedestal. The figure is photographed against a plain backdrop. The caption identifies the sculpture as dry-lacquered wood from the 8th century and places it at Jingoji in Kyoto. Jingoji is a Shingon temple in the Takao hills of Kyoto, and Yakushi Nyorai is its principal image, a focus of prayers for healing.
