About this postcard
A young man stands full length in a studio against a plain light backdrop, facing the camera in a U.S. Army uniform of the World War I years: a campaign hat, high-collared tunic, breeches, canvas leggings, and boots. His pose is formal and still, the sort of keepsake portrait many recruits had made before leaving for camp or for France. The campaign hat and high collar belong to the Army's field dress of the 1910s, when soldiers trained and shipped overseas in much the same basic kit. Photographers working near recruiting offices and training camps turned out these studio portraits for soldiers and their families.
